Five Iconic Artists of their Time Compared
Music is an art that has always existed. Music creates passion and fame. Since the fifties, music has evolved very fast and many different music styles have emerged (rock & roll, pop, rap, hip-hop etc...). Here we present a story anlyzing the most iconic artists of their generation since 1950 with completely different music styles : Frank Sinatra and his jazzy tones, The Beatles and their (soft) rock & roll hits, Michael Jackson the king of Pop, Eminem the rap god and Rihanna the Hip-Hop queen.
This story goes through each artist and compares them with respect to their musicality based on audio features extracted from Spotify and their lyrics extracted from Genius. Data vizualization has been created to allow the reader to explore the different artist musical universes and to discover their similarities and differences.

First, when selecting all the songs for all the artists, it appears that the word "love" is the most used word for all artists (except Eminem where it is "like"). It is comforting to know that there is so much love in this world.
Secondly, baby is in the top words of all artists except Frank Sinatra (and Eminem again…). We can deduce here that vocabulary has changed since Frank Sinatra's period but also that Eminem is lonely.
It is not a surprise, Eminem has negative lyrics and is using many times (almost 1500) pretty bad words we can not write here (like fuck or shit). The data are pretty explicit, Eminem is a sad (or mad) guy.
Artists Comparison
Let’s try now to go more in-depth and explore the link between some of these five artists on specific songs. Indeed, many of them have sang the same song, sang together or have been produced by the same producer. On the following vizualisation, the zones represent the artist audio signature and the lines represent a specific song common to both artists. The zones have been generated as follows : the median of each feature of the artist's discography for the center and the standard deviation for the width. Play with buttons to see the different songs common to two artists.
Michael Jackson & Frank Sinatra
Michael Jackson & Frank Sinatra both have been produced by the legendary Quincy Jones. For Michael Jackson, his greateast albums such as Off The Wall, Thriller or Bad were produced by Quincy Jones, and for Sinatra, he has collaborated multiple times with Quincy Jones, but he was produced only once for his album L.A is my Lady.
Below, you can observe the following line graph. In purple is drawn the area representing Michael Jackson's most representative audio feature values, and in red, Sinatra's. You can now see in yellow the mean value for Michael Jackson's albums produced by Quincy Jones, and the mean value for Sinatra's Quincy Jones produced tracks.
Quincy Jones is a record producer, musician and film producer. He has worked with famous musicians such as Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra. He is the most Grammy-nominated artist in history, with 79 nominations and 27 wins.
We can see that Jones created the musical style of Michael Jackson that we all know, as the audio features of his albums fit perfectly within Michael Jackson's discography. He also respected Sinatra's musical style. We can see that Quincy Jone's talent comes from producing quality music that fit the artists he works with.
Rihanna & Eminem
Rihanna and Eminem sang four different songs together in different albums. Some songs belong to Rihanna albums, some to Eminem’s. Play with the buttons to see how these songs fit in the audio signature of Eminem or Rihanna.
Love the Way you lie (original) fits more with the Eminem signature but Love the Way you lie (Part II) fits more with Rihanna's Signature.
Numb is a perfect balance between the two styles (that are already pretty similar).
The Monster fits more with Eminem but is balanced.
Frank Sinatra & The Beatles
Frank Sinatra reprised two of The Beatles' classics: Yesterday and Something. How does each interpretation relate to both artists?
We can see that Sinatra seems to switch his style when singing The Beatles songs but does not try to imitate their music. Yesterday by The Beatles also seems more like a Sinatra-song, then Yesterday by Sinatra! It looks like both of these artists could have been influenced by each other.
These vizualisations are an efficient way to compare artists and songs for these artists. What artists are you interested in comparing? What did we miss? If you are interested in this, you can visit our Github Repository, and use our tools to create your own vizualisations.
We can see the diminution of the "acousticness" value for more modern musicians. As expected, Eminem seems to be the loudest and the most energetic singer. What else can you observe?
